Alain Chu, Senior Counsel

Alain Chu is Senior Counsel for HMLG and brings a wealth of experience as an entertainment, transactional intellectual property and Internet technology lawyer.  He specializes in strategic counseling, drafting and negotiation of complex, cross-border intellectual property licenses (content and technology) and a broad range of content, commercial and marketing agreements in the entertainment, digital media and Internet industries.

Prior to joining HMLG, Alain was in-house counsel for Tickets.com, Inc., A Division of Major League Baseball Advanced Media, LLP, where he prepared, reviewed, counseled and negotiated a variety of agreements and licenses in connection with the provision of ticketing technology and support services for TDC’s clients’ venues, including the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, the Boston Red Sox, the Chicago Cubs, the Texas Rangers, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Milwaukee Brewers, the Oakland A’s,  the Cincinnati Reds, the Detroit Tigers, the Kansas City Royals, the Washington Nationals, the Florida Marlins, the Pittsburg Pirates, the San Francisco Giants, the Minnesota Twins, Seattle Theater Group, HSBC Arena, BOK Center and the International Speedway Corporation. In addition, Alain spearheaded the creation of a Chinese joint venture between Tickets.com and China Sports Industry International. 

Alain has also held the following in-house positions: 

Vice President and General Counsel, Business and Legal Affairs for MMJ Games, Inc., a start-up video game developer for wireless devices, where Alain managed the development, licensing, production and distribution of MMJ Games’ video games.   

Senior Counsel, Legal Affairs for Electronic Arts, Inc., the World’s biggest independent video game publisher, where Alain managed the development, licensing, production and distribution of EA’s video game franchises including, James Bond, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, FIFA, Madden, NBA Live, NCAA Football, Majestic, Ultima Online, Knockout Kings, American McGee’s Alice, Call of Duty and SSX. 

Senior Counsel for the Music Division of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Inc., where Alain managed the licensing and creation of original music for SPE’s television series and motion pictures, including, Men In Black, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Jerry Maguire, Go, Dawson’s Creek, Party of Five, Godzilla, Jumanji, Bad Boys, Desperado, The Fifth Element, Anaconda, Air Force One, Gattaca, Spiceworld, Can’t Hardly Wait, Wild Things, Blue Streak, Stuart Little and Charlie’s Angels.

Born in Hong Kong, Alain was raised in Ascot, England and attended Heatherdown, the prestigious preparatory academy with Prince Edward and David Cameron, the current British Prime Minister.  Alain received his Bachelor of Arts in Business Economics from the University of California at Los Angeles and his Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School.  

Alain is licensed to practice law in the State of California.
